EPIPHANY

A few months ago, we were headed to my sister-in-law’s house with the kids in tow.  We don’t go there too often, so my son really isn’t very familiar with the way to their house.  As we turned off the highway onto a side country road with just a few miles to go, Kendrick said,

“Is this the world they live in?”

I’ve referred before to the things my kids do and say and how sometimes those instances just knock me upside the head and roll around on the inside of me for awhile.  I’ve had some other experiences recently that have opened my eyes to just how self-absorbed many of us truly are—myself included.  Even those of us who are totally immersed in the pursuit of God have the opportunity to overcome this mentality…maybe I should say ‘especially’ those of us!  I’ve seen myself zero my focus in on what God is doing in my life at that particular moment so much so that I am blinded to what God is doing in everyone else’s lives!  I seem to forget sometimes that my Lord is working in more lives than just my own.

I thank God that He’s opening my eyes to see a bigger picture.  I’ve heard it said that your circumstance is nothing more than the circle you stand in.  My circumstance is real; being a stay-at-home mom of 2 little ones with a husband who often works long hours can sometimes seem monotonous; being a P&W leader at my church can sometimes lead me to only think about my church.  Those things are pertinent in my life and should be but if I focus only on them, my circle of influence is not very big.  Let me not be so consumed with ‘my world’ that my neighbor never crosses my mind or the stranger at the store doesn’t get the encouraging smile or word from me that could truly change their day and give them hope for the future.  May our tunnel vision be blasted open to see ALL of God’s handiwork as truly marvelous in our eyes!

But how does this happen?  We stop looking on the horizontal plane through our eyes and look through God’s eyes.  A tree it towers over you when you’re up close to it.  As you rise in an airplane, the tree is in reality still the same size but your perspective of it is much different.  We see a larger view the higher you go; the view from the heavens (where the Bible says we’re seated) through the perfected vision of God reveals a tapestry of His purpose woven through all of our lives.  We see He is ALTOGETHER LOVELY.  The question then changes from how big is your world to how big is your view?
